Aeromag De-Icing Building
Additional Info
Award Winner : United Rentals - Storage & Office Solutions
Architectural Excellence : The top building is a slightly modified 10’ x 40’ office being used as a viewing tower at the airport to direct planes into the de-icing area. It has one interior partition at 11’6” for the Operations Manager. The remaining 24’6” of the building is used by dispatchers to communicate with pilots and Aeromag employees. Three of the containers are used to store skids of material, thereby minimizing the ground space used. The 40’ Ground Level Office is utilized as a shop foreman office and also as a lunchroom.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Aeromag requested that Pac-Van provide them with a ready-built structure to use as an alternative to constructing a brand new tower. Their request was to have an elevated office, a lunchroom and some storage. The FAA required presentation of the structure plans for approval of safety and aesthetics. Aeromag inquired on the possibility of stacking containers and setting an office on top. With the assistance of a structural engineer, it was deemed feasible. Due to time constraints, this was the only option to have them operational by their deadline. Within three weeks we had a print for the steel structure and re-certified prints for the building to submit to the city and to the FAA for approval. Partnering with a structural engineer and steel erecting contractor allowed us to provide a cost-effective solution that enabled Aeromag to fulfill their commitment to Cleveland/Hopkins airport in a timely fashion.
Occupied Date : 1/22/2007
Production Start Date : 11/1/2006
Project Location City : Cleveland
Project Location State Name : OH
Technical Innovation : The steel structure consists of (2) 12” X38’ “H” beams bolted to (3) 8” X 12’ “H” beams running transverse the office frame where it is clipped and bolted on both sides at (12) points. The
8” X 18’ vertical beams are bolted at each corner on the top and anchored to the concrete pad on the bottom. The innovative “stacking” of these buildings helped the customer achieve the minimized footprint with all of the visibility needed by the dispatchers to see planes throughout the entire terminal.
