Architectural Excellence : This design-build project featured an 836 SF non-combustible essential services building, which was a critical component of a new aircraft engineering project. This building was full of high-density electronic, data-processing cable-trays, which allowed the engineers to control all testing from inside the building. This facility was built using three small modules due to the extremely narrow roads and number of buildings situated in and around the work-site. The modular structure was designed with all steel construction, using a perimeter frame with 24-gauge corrugated sub-floor with concrete overlay plus electrostatic dissipative carpet tiles, steel studs, 22-gauge roof and 26-gauge metal ribbed siding. The building required open 10’ ceilings, so that all electrical racks and ducting could be easily accessed from inside the building. The building was welded to a steel I-beam foundation, designed so that if a nearby fuel line burst, the fuel would flow under & around the building.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This single-story building was built with the majority of all items installed in the factory, limiting the amount of site work, saving substantial time and money for the client. Other than the building installation, the only items requiring site labor was the roof-top HVAC unit, roof rails/ladder, some cable-tray connections and wiring. The building utilized more highly rated insulated windows/doors, double layers of sheetrock, building wrapping, motion sensors for fluorescent lights, a variable speed heat-pump and carpet tiles that were an environmentally sustainable product with very little waste. The recycling program achieved greater sustainability by limiting waste materials and the reuse of recycled materials in floors, ceilings, siding and insulation.

Technical Innovation : Due to the extreme height of the building, special double-drop low-boy trailers were utilized, and all three sections had to be delivered to the site between 11:00 pm and 3:00 am. The modules were off-loaded and rolled up to the steel foundation using specialized rolling carts, manufactured for this particular job. Sound dampening specifications were critical to this building, as a large turbine generator was located right next to the building, and because a massive 20 ton roof-top, variable speed heat-pump was directly overhead. Thus, the structure was designed with a 61-STC roof, 76-STC floor, 61-STC siding, 40-STC insulated windows and 40-STC exterior doors.
