Architectural Excellence : The Anoka Hennepin School District faced with declining enrollment, was looking for cost effective ways to consolidate schools while maintaining a high quality learning environment. The solution combined the remodeling of an elementary school with the addition of a modular building to create the Anoka Middle School for the Arts, Washington Campus. Modular space includes classrooms for Art, Science, Social Studies, Music, Theater and Band along with mechanical and technology rooms and restrooms. Area residents were concerned that a “typical” modular building would decrease property values. The architect came up with a design that included site installed brick & siding matching the existing school and blending with the surrounding properties. Rooftop HVAC units were added to improve appearance and increase energy efficiency. The building’s interior finishes mirror those of the existing building including painted gypsum walls, suspended ceilings, tiled floors and a sprinkler system.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Costs were controlled due to the speed of the project. Five, high efficiency, natural gas roof top HVAC units were provided to heat and cool this building. Energy efficient features minimize operational costs. HVAC units with CO2 sensors operate the CRV and pre-sets on the thermostats ensure quiet, comfortable, consistent airflow and optimal air quality, while allowing the district to control energy costs when the building is not in use. Exterior walls built with 2” x 6” framing and R-19 insulation and R-38 roof insulation, offer upgrades from basic building codes and give increased energy savings at a minimal initial cost.

Technical Innovation : IMS along with Whitley Manufacturing provided this building, which needed to be completed in 2.5 months. This very aggressive timeline for completion required cooperation from the manufacturer (design and build), governmental agencies (approvals & permitting), architect & owner (approvals and material color selections), and IMS (building installation and site finishes). In addition, the school district had contracted several other phases of site utility work and construction to separate contractors. Every entity had to work together to accomplish the common goal. Design requirements created long lead times for many components of the building. Whitley worked with IMS and local contractors to bring the project to completion on time. Siding was shipped loose and pre-painted for site installation. This eliminated the need for the extra step of painting on site. Steel mate-beams were incorporated to allow for additional mate-line/ceiling clearance for easier site utility installation.
