Atlantic Power Office
Additional Info
Award Winner : Metric Modular
Architectural Excellence : This office was designed as an addition to a power plant at a run-of-river hydroelectric power generating station. The office has perimeter private offices, a conference room and open common area with direct access to the power plant control room. The building incorporates architectural features reflective of the surrounding coastal mountain region and was designed to maximize office space requirements on minimal available land with minimal impact on the environment. The exterior matches the colour and profile of the adjacent power plant, and the interior finishes were designed to complement the old growth forest and natural surroundings of the site. Large windows maximize natural light and take full advantage of the views offered by the spectacular location.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The offsite construction and accelerated site component minimized the impact on staff and operations. Rainscreen technology provides additional protection from the elements.

Technical Innovation : The building was constructed within the constraints of restricted site access and the crane lift. Site challenges included access from a logging road, overhead power lines and a critical lift requiring custom engineering because of the maximum allowable building weight of 24,000 lbs. The building was designed and constructed to fit onto a site-built steel support structure and meet stringent seismic requirements. The modules were craned over the existing power house and set onto the raised steel support structure in a heavily wooded area on the edge of a rock outcropping above the river.
