Architectural Excellence : This building is used to book incoming inmates at the Baltimore City Detention Center. The city needed to add space because their existing space couldn’t handle the demand. It is a 24’x53’ doublewide that needed to fit in an inaccessible area of the property. The layout includes 4 perimeter offices, a kitchen area, a bathroom with prison grade fixtures for inmates and a separate one for staff. The exterior of the facility is high rib steel for durability and is painted in a color to complement the look of surrounding buildings. The interior finishes only needed to require low maintenance so we recommended vinyl gyp and 1/8” tile floors. The Ceiling is acoustical so data cables could be run easily throughout the building and into adjacent buildings. Steel doors and vinyl windows were added for durability.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The customer originally requested a Type 2, non- combustible building. It went over budget, so Wilmot proposed an alternate Type 5 building and saved them 50% while still addressing fire rating concerns. Wilmot also partnered with the Owner’s Rep by having them handle utility connections and the installation of the building. Wilmot’s engineers collaborated with them to design the structure’s foundation which was critical for mission success of this project. They also determined that choosing a modular building over their original plans of using traditional construction saved the owner 6 months time to complete the project – which saved money in labor and operation’s disruptions.

Technical Innovation : The biggest challenge faced for this project was that the only place to set the building was on an inaccessible existing concrete structure. A crane was used to lift the building on to its foundation and 30’ long longitudinal beams were welded directly to the perimeter frame. Axles and hitches were all removed. The building was also being set very close to another building so two exterior walls had to be fire rated and a sprinkler system installed to meet local fire codes.
LED lights and Low E windows were used for energy efficiency and a white rubber roof was installed to meet IGCC requirements.
