Blast Resistant Office Village
Additional Info
Award Winner : ATCO Structures & Logistics Ltd.
Architectural Excellence : ATCO installed a blast-resistant complex to provide a safe place for employees to work at an oil refinery in Ontario, Canada. The units were designed with two doors for easy access from either side with limited disruption. The space is used for a variety of purposes, including offices, permit centres and lunchrooms.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Building a site built blast-resistant complex with a footprint of 12,480 square feet would have been extremely disruptive to the operation of the client site. Total build and design time would have tripled or even quadrupled to accomplish what ATCO Hunter was able to do in four months. The buildings are relocatable, allowing the client to move or reconfigure the units as the site evolves and grows. By allowing the client to provide these on site buildings, there is a massive cost savings in not having to transport staff offsite on a daily basis for lunches, permits and other critical site functions that benefit the project's efficiency as a whole.

Technical Innovation : The blast-resistant complex was designed as a two-storey structure to double the number of employees who can use the space without increasing the complex's footprint. By stacking the buildings into groups of four and connecting them to the correct specifications, the blast rating of 8psi, 200ms is still achieved. The lifting lug systems are designed for 59k pounds each, allowing individual buildings to be easily removed and relocated on site or off site as required, despite the heavy weight of the blast-resistant buildings. Mirror image units were used and placed back to back, simplifying installation.
