Bogner Hall - 3rd Residence Hall
Additional Info
Award Winner : Axis Construction Corp.
Architectural Excellence : Bogner Hall is a 28,000 sq ft 3 story building with full basement. It features full brick and cast stone masonry cladding, aluminum and glass curtain wall and is served with a four-stop elevator. Positioned perpendicular to the existing residence halls on campus, it creates a new plaza and hub for social activity. The three-story, coeducational building houses 96 students in double and triple style rooms. A security desk, three study lounges, two private music practice rooms with pianos are on the lower level. Large lounge with TV and games, couches and a kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave and counter all make it more than just a place to sleep after a long day of classes. Comprised of 58 modules, in Type II (steel - noncombustible) it features an automatic fire sprinkler system. It has the latest security technology, wireless internet throughout, in-suite climate control as well as a back-up generator capable of supporting the other two residence halls in case of power failure.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This residence hall had to be placed on a very small footprint wedged between two existing residence halls on an active campus. Building off site was a positive consideration in the projected cost of construction. The construction schedule was reduced by 50% saving the owner significant costs in labor, mobilization and demobilization, as there was limited area to stage materials and work. This reduction in schedule allowed the college to increase enrollment one full academic year sooner than conventional construction. On-site activity, disruption and disturbance were minimized, reducing construction hazards and their associated risks. In addition, the selection of energy conserving features, such as the blend of mechanical and passive ventilation outlined above, coupled with occupancy sensors, energy efficient lighting with programmable lighting controls, building management system, and water saving fixtures all integrate to provide the owner with lower operational costs over time.

Technical Innovation : The building accentuates modularity, with the second and third floors off-set to cantilever out along the rear of the building, making it appear stepped. Structural steel post and beam assembly with light gauge infill and pre-poured concrete floors help achieve sound deadening and fire ratings. The facility was built together at the plant as a three-story structure to ensure precision fit and finish of all features and systems. Once completed, it was deconstructed and loaded to transporters. This allowed the building to arrive with a very high level of completion, reducing site finish time and minimizing disruption to the campus. Green features include recycled content in steel and wood finishes, solar reflective white EPDM roof, an ExoAir air barrier system with rigid and sprayed insulation, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, gas fired RTU’s with economizers, and a fully automated BMS system to reduce energy. Plumbing features low-flow motion sensor faucets and low-flush toilets.
