Cambriam 34-Suite Permanent Operations Lodge
Additional Info
Award Winner : Nomodic Modular Structures Inc.
Architectural Excellence : Designed to minimize site footprint, the two storey building is configured like that of a contemporary hotel as opposed to a traditional camp through avoidance of arctic corridors. There are 9 foot ceilings throughout the vast majority of interior living spaces with the exception being the building’s main entrance which showcases a two storey floor to ceiling exposed heavy timber truss awning and roof system, chandelier, pendent lighting, and cantilevered grand staircase. Also visible from the main entrance lobby is a two storey/two sided stone natural gas fireplace.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Nomodic’s involvement in the project from start to finish provided the critical continuity necessary to minimize costly field labour associated with change orders resulting from unclear scope allocation. The implementation of LVL beams in the first floor modules enabled Nomodic to reduce the pile foundation count by 30% yielding a cost savings of over $70,000.
Design Firm Name : Douglas Sollows Architect Inc.
Engineering Firm Name : TWS Engineering Ltd.
Green Building Description : Through the use of spray foam insulation and implementation of staggered stud wall framing Nomodic dramatically increased the thermal and acoustic efficiency of the building. Occupancy based Energy Management Systems (EMU) were included in all personal living quarters which reduces energy consumption. LED pot lights throughout the majority of the building along with triple glazed, low-e, argon filled windows further improve the efficiency and sustainability of the lodge.

Technical Innovation : The vaulted heavy timber truss awning and roof system was achieved through use of 10’ factory built panels which were individually craned into place on site. The multi-storey nature of build was a challenge from a structural point of view and ultimately required Nomodic to use Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) for the first level module floor beams in order to minimize the chance of warping, twisting, bowing, or shrinking. Glued-laminated timber beams and posts (Glulams) were also used to increase the ability to span large distances in the second floor Games Room and Fitness Centre.
