Architectural Excellence : Canyon Village is one of the highest and most remote sites in Yellowstone National Park. The 3 new multi-story lodges (which will be followed by 2 additional lodges to be completed Spring 2016) will replace more than 400 worn-out cabins.
The 3 lodges feature common meeting areas and a total of 240 guest rooms. Sustainability is a key focus for the park and the completed project is on track to apply for LEED Platinum certification.
From the onset, the project had a big push to use techniques and materials that support the park’s environmental mission and will last for many years to come. Built in a national park, the project is an expression of the holistic thinking you would expect in nature.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : In 2013, the park began removing more than 400 old, worn-out cabins and replacing them with these new sustainably built lodges. After the completion of the lodges, the land around the work site will be fully rehabilitated and will include new walking and biking paths. The park spared no expense in making sure the guest accommodations are top notch without deviating from the park’s environmental mission.

Technical Innovation : Prefabricated modular construction was the chosen method for building the lodges due to the short build season and the shortage of skilled labor available at the remote location. An added benefit to the modular construction was the limited disruption to park guests. Modules were trucked into the park in the middle of the night so that very few, if any park guests were ever even aware that a construction project was underway.
Special planning went into the design of the lodges to ensure they were esthetically pleasing yet capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and excessive snowfall. A unique challenge was presented by the fact that the Lodges are inaccessible throughout the winter so engineers had to develop a way for them be completely drained and winterized each year.
A finished, three story prototype, was fabricated to allow all trades to view their various scopes before the main production run began. The quality exhibited in the prototype and the hands on learning opportunity.
