City of Redlands Police Lockup
Additional Info
Award Winner : M Space Holdings LLC
Architectural Excellence : The City of Redlands Police Department was forced to vacate their existing Public Safety Hall in late 2008 due to the presence of asbestos and structural issues. As an interim measure, the city had to relocate certain functions of the Safety Hall such as Dispatch, Booking and Lockup to a temporary location at the City Corporate Yard. Since this is an ‘essential facility’ it must be in constant operation at all times. They were looking for a quick and affordable option for their new facility and M Space provided just that. M Space worked with the City of Redlands to create a facility that met all of their requirements and was designed to coordinate with other existing city buildings. The building consists of four adult holdings cells, one juvenile holding cell, two interview/interrogation rooms, an evidence room and a fingerprint, photos and breathalyzer area.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The City of Redlands saved money by deciding to build this modular facility. For the time between vacating their old facility and deciding to have the modular building constructed, any time they made an arrest they had to bring that person to the county jail to be processed. It was inconvenient to have to transport the detainees twenty miles, from one facility to another, not to mention the handling exposure. In addition, the county charged them a fee every time they brought a person in, which ended up being very costly. Since the installation of the lock-up facility the city has saved a great deal of time, energy and money.

Technical Innovation : All the doors to the holding cells have 1” polycarbonate/glass one-way vision panels and Sergent M9200 institutional locks with tamer-resistant screw plates. There are also audio devices in each cell. The juvenile cell was placed in front of the main desk with a large vision panel so it could be monitored at all times. All doors automatically lock when they are closed and security cameras are located in the main part of the building. The facility is equipped with a sophisticated fire alarm system, sprinklers wired directly into the building and a diesel UPS (back up generator system), which ensures this essential facility does not lose power. The building includes several correctional grade features such as an Acorn 1440 series 18” lavy/toilet suicide resistant prison spec toilet and sink in each adult cell. The interior walls and ceilings in the cells and hallway are FRP panels over 1-1/8” CDX plywood and the cell doors are 18 GA commercial steel with KD commercial steel frames.
