Architectural Excellence : These units were used to expand the space at an existing school in Quebec, Canada. Eight 12' x 34' modular units were converted into four 24' x 26' classrooms with an eight-foot corridor linking the classrooms to the existing school building. Each classroom has a Smart Board for enhanced student/teacher interaction and its own HVAC system, making the classrooms more comfortable. The units have large windows, allowing for an abundance of natural light. Light colored finishes were used to provide a warm environment.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : To complement the existing HVAC system designed for office occupancy, an air exchanger / heat recuperating unit was installed in each classroom. The classrooms and connecting corridors were designed to provide a warm and permanent feel, while still allowing the units to be easily separated into standalone classrooms in the future, if needed. The windows are large, decreasing the amount of interior lighting required.

Technical Innovation : Since the units were originally used in the first and second floors of a complex, additional insulation and a sloped roof were required to combat the cold temperatures and the up to 120 inches of snow that falls annually in Quebec. The roof's steel beams allowed for 30' clear spans, creating an open feel in the classrooms.
