Control Room Complex in Cerro Verde copper mine

Architectural Excellence : The layout responds to an elevated location were these units must be superimposed over a major processing facility that is part of the industrial plant inside the mine. Given the basic Client requirements, the 11 units were designed as heavy duty steel structures with fire retardant and fire proof materials. In the exterior a conformed metal structural sheet welded to the I-beam floor and roof was used. Mineral wool was used for insulation and RF gypsum board for the interior surface, which was lined with pre-painted steel sheet in the critical areas. The main Control Room area was a mini complex of 5 units, 15 feet high that once installed, forms a single area of 60 by 20 feet (1,200 sqf). The modules were crane lifted over 60 feet to its final location.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Special considerations for vibration absorbing thru pads were made, since the modules were mounted in a separate bigger structure, which was being mounted simultaneously by other contractor. Especial care was taken with fire resistant materials due to the industrial location of the project.

Technical Innovation : Control Room modular units were especially tall, to accommodate special installations and systems below and elevated technical floor and inside suspended ceiling plenum. The phone, data and control wiring, run thru all units. Doors, entrance stairs and windows in the Control Room complex were at an unconventional height to accommodate the technical floor. The design had to consider the partial installation of the central HVAC system while other parts like the air filtering supply unit were installed by others later.Transport was an issue due to road limitations and the presence of bridges and tunnels in a 650 mile route to site. Three special operations were done, taking off and on the tallest modules from the trucks each time a tunnel was encountered.
