Architectural Excellence : Dallas Community College introduced a new program offering High School students the opportunity to take classes on campus and earn college credit. M Space designed and installed a 17,242 square foot building, consisting of classrooms, office space, restrooms and a lounge area. The building has nine foot ceilings and a roof made of a parapet rib system that presents a squared off, flat line appearance. The 10’ wide corridors were fitted with 72” x 48” one-way mirrors. Exterior doors are bronze framed commercial with tinted glass. The building was laid out in an L shape design running 162’ on one side and 165’ on the other. Galvanized 30-gauge steel was used for the building bottom board. The building exterior has a Hardi-panel stucco finish. The interior flexibility needs were met by installing changeable modular carpeting and wall coverings. The customer has the option of altering the interior look of the building as desired. The entire building was built and installed in 94 days.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building was designed to conserve energy and water. The entire building was set up with occupancy sensors that automatically turn the light off when a room is empty, and waterless, no flush restroom fixtures. The choice of a modular building versus traditional construction was a determining factor because of the reduced site waste, speed of installation and cost effectiveness of modular construction when compared to traditional construction.

Technical Innovation : DCC’s number one concern was security. Therefore, the design included the installation of video surveillance units and one-way mirrors along the L-shaped interior corridors. The surveillance units allow the building to be monitored at all times and the mirrors make it possible for the buildings security guard to watch classrooms from the hallways. Another technical aspect of the building are the ceiling installed projector screens that can be lowered with the flip of a switch.
