Architectural Excellence : The Jackfish District Camp Lodge houses 880 workers and is comprised of ten two-storey dormitory wings surrounding a central site-built core. Each wing has 88 private rooms with 205 square feet of personal space designed to provide every worker with a home away from home. The rooms are outfitted with three-piece private washrooms, a desk with phone and internet connection, a 37" flat screen television, microwave, fridge and two storage closets. Each wing has its own laundry room with commercial washers and dryers. Superior quality finishes and fixtures were selected for use throughout the dormitories as well as soft lighting, custom millwork and painted trims to enhance ambiance.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This facility is designed to minimize both short-term and long-term costs. Due to the extremely high cost of labour in the northern Alberta region, all elements that could reasonably be fabricated off site were. This provides the added benefit of maintaining a consistent high-quality finish throughout the project that would be difficult if on-site workforces were utilized.
All water used on site must be treated before and after use so plumbing fixtures were selected for their low-water consumption characteristics including dual-flush toilets and ultra-low-flow shower heads. Water heaters and make-up-air units are high-efficiency gas. Each room has an electric PTAC heater for individual comfort but is connected to the building management system so it can be centrally shut off when the room is unoccupied. All lighting has compact fluorescent or high-efficiency T5 lamps and is occupancy sensor controlled in common spaces.

Technical Innovation : Jackfish Lodge is intended to be a place for workers to rest and relax for approximately 40 years without major renovations, and materials were selected for long-term comfort and durability. Carpet tile allows for easy repair and maintenance and heavy commercial-grade vinyl flooring is coved up walls in areas prone to dampness, including washrooms and laundry rooms. The water lines are copper pipe and include a hot water recirculation system to ensure residents never have to wait for hot water. The plumbing stacks are durable cast iron which also reduces noise in the lower units. Multi-layer wall and floor assemblies were constructed to exceed minimum STC ratings required by code. This greatly reduces noise between rooms and corridors, particularly important when residents are working different shifts. The dorm wings are arranged around the central core to minimize the distance required to walk between the dormitories, the central dining and recreation facilities and the parking lot.
