Architectural Excellence : To provide the students of Diamond Bar High School a high performance learning environment and expand student capacities and services, a two-story modular classroom building was designed to work with the difficult sloped site. The project consists of a two-story modular classroom and restroom building with covered exterior walkways on all sides connecting to the existing site at several different grade points. The building contains more than 28,200 square feet and houses 20 classrooms, student restrooms, a staff break room, workroom facilities and integrated building service operations rooms. Classrooms have large hollow metal windows in the front and a substantial visual teaching wall with integrated cabinets. An attached monumental clock tower overlooks the entire campus and contains the elevator which provides access to the building and site at three different levels. The building exterior features cement plaster and painted steel railings which enhance the architectural look.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : A highly efficient, high performance learning environment was a primary project focus. A “cool roof” single ply roof membrane system was installed throughout providing a high quality roof assembly, reducing heating loads within the building that is easily maintainable, long lasting and high quality. Each space in the building is heated and cooled by energy efficient, high SEER individually controlled gas electric roof mounted packaged air conditioners. All classroom lighting is controlled by occupancy sensors which automatically turn off the lights when the rooms are not in use. Dual switching for all light fixtures allows for the reduction of electrical lighting use when adequate daylight is available through each of the 80 tubular skylights installed and the large front windows based on the amount of natural light in each individual room. These daylighting strategies result in a significant reduction in electrical lighting usage during a majority of the instructional day.

Technical Innovation : The site's variable grades allows access to several levels of the school campus. The second story connects to the campus at three different points enhancing the visual appearance of the building and its surroundings. The building features an innovative second story balcony canopy with recessed roof parapet that conceals the high efficiency roof mounted mechanical equipment, protects the students from inclimate weather, controls the entrance of direct sunlight into the classrooms, and creates a design focused experienced, embracing the existing campus architecture. To achieve daylighting strategies, highly specialized building frames were designed and constructed which minimized the building height while allowing for the high ceilings necessary for light transfer while providing space for significant utilities pathways and mechanical ductwork in the attic space. The building provides abundant natural light into the second story classrooms with eight tubular skylights in each room.
