Dunlace Public School Addition
Additional Info
Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions
Architectural Excellence : The single classroom and corridor addition was comprised of 4 modules that were a careful match to the existing school with its brick veneer exterior and prefinished architectural aluminum panel fascia. Walls are built with a mold resistant drywall, taped, filled and painted light, neutral colors and the floors are vinyl composite tile over concrete. The classroom space is expansive, and includes a bathroom with kid sized fixtures and easy to clean ceramic finishes. Natural day-lighting is provided through four large windows set low enough to the floor to allow views. The corridor module allows a separate entrance in to the classroom and connects to the existing school.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : When the school board was required to fulfil its obligation to provide Full Day Kindergarten in its school, the modular approach was determined to offer the best solution for speed, safety and efficiency. For energy cost savings to the owner, the superior building envelope and fenestration as well as the energy management system is expected to significantly contribute to the operational cost savings of the school going forward.

Technical Innovation : The building is non-combustible recycled steel construction with concrete floors and is attached at grade level to the existing building with a conditioned crawl space below. Structural steel in the roof is sloped to internal roof drains that are connected to the storm system under the building in the crawlspace. A floor hatch allows easy access for any inspections or plumbing maintenance issues if required. For improved energy efficiency, the building envelope is designed using R20 spray foam insulation applied to the floor assembly and R20 rigid insulation applied over the exterior of the steel wall studs in horizontal “Z” bars followed by a continuous R6 rigid insulation to significantly reduce thermal bridging. Windows are insulated Low E glass in high efficiency clear anodized aluminum frames with warm edged spacers. HVAC systems are hydronic with energy management systems included. All paints and adhesives are low to no VOC.
