Ford Motor Company Medical First Aid Building
Additional Info
Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions
Architectural Excellence : The concept for this new permanent medical first aid building was designed with Ford and Ford’s AE Engineering consultants. At the early stages of concept design, Ford indicated the need to build a modular facility to minimize site disruption and increase floor space at this facility on the Ford Windsor site. Ford wanted to centralize a dedicated Medical facility at this location. The original Medical needed to stay functional as long as possible until the new Medical Modular was ready for occupancy. The exterior of the medical facility was designed to complement the original production facility and add an Architectural flare to this new highly visible location. The multi-coloured vertical siding was done using NRB’s own FP1 metal panel system with stock colours to minimize any long order or custom products. The modular building is set in a corner of the existing plant in order to allow for direct access through the in-plant ambulance bay room if immediate assistance is required.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Cost effectiveness was mostly obtained based on the premise that the building was 90% constructed off-site. All inspections, QA and IT reviews required during the construction process were completed at the NRB site through the various disciplines and Ford coordinators. The building preparation and foundations on site were also able to start at a much later time in the construction schedule, which further minimized the disruption on site.

Technical Innovation : Structural steel framing with concrete floors, set at grade were used in order to seamlessly align with the original plant floor and to eliminate any required exterior accessible ramps. The ambulance room was designed to support the mini-ambulance as well as its turning radius, and the charging capabilities of the equipment needed. 1hr and 2hr rated wall construction was required to separate the various spaces based on multiple uses throughout the building floor plan. The interior walls and washroom/decontamination room ceilings are painted gypsum board. First aid rooms and hallways consist of acoustic ceilings to support wiring and cable chases for the many communications and services that are required. Each room was designed with specific use and to suit some of the existing furniture and fittings which was to be relocated from the existing medical facility.
