Architectural Excellence : This one-storey daycare for the City of Vancouver was a full turnkey project bordering on school grounds and a city park. The building was designed to adhere to very strict city design board, school board and parks board regulations as well as health and safety guidelines for childcare facilities. The exterior design is reflective of the residential neighbourhood with a beautifully landscaped play area in a park-like setting.
The interior includes an activity room, art space and nap room as well as an office, parents’ room, kitchen and storage area, and features light maple cabinets and birch cubbies at the entry. One of the design features is a heated crawl space to keep the floor warm for children’s floor activities. Door lites and numerous windows maximize natural light. The exterior is hardi plank siding with an 8" reveal, hip style roof with 4/12 pitch and includes a covered play area connected to the main roof.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The roof has R40 blown-in insulation and the exterior walls and floor also have high R values to make the building very energy efficient. The interior warm air, normally exhausted to the exterior, is collected and cycled through the HRV and electronic air filter to recover the heat otherwise exhausted, thereby reducing the heating costs. The high-efficiency, gas-fired furnace combined with the latest technology in HRV and electronic air filtering provides economical heat and ventilation.
