Halbert Construction - Naval Dental Facility
Additional Info
Award Winner : ModSpace
Architectural Excellence : Halbert Construction was awarded a project to upgrade the Dental Facility building for the Navy in San Diego. In order to complete the project they needed to relocate the entire program into a temporary modular building during the construction of the existing facility. The dental facility needed to house relocated people for a 12 month period during construction. ModSpace was able to provide a temporary dental facility that to house administrative space, dental exam rooms, x-ray rooms, digital imaging rooms, processing and laboratory rooms, clean rooms, locker rooms, restrooms and offices. The project needed to be executed in an extremely tight timeframe to get the 18 unit complex built out, delivered and set up for the customer to be functional in the temporary space. The timeframe from signing of the contract to completion of the project was just under 2 months.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The Dental Facility building was made up of 18 wide open in-fleet e-plex buildings that had to be completely built out to meet the customer’s desired layout. The symmetrical layout of the e-plex building units made the installation go faster – therefore saving time and cost for the customer - and also provided flexibility with the layout that was desired.

Technical Innovation : The most difficult issue on this project was completing it in the extremely tight timeframe. We had to build out several hundred thousand dollars of modifications to complete the building. This building was set up for 40+ dental chairs, x-ray, panoramic room, autoclaves, oral surgery general offices and locker rooms. The complexity of the many different rooms to house sensitive dental equipment added an additional challenge to the project.
