Hauling truck maintenance shop
Additional Info
Award Winner : Corner Cast Construction Inc.
Architectural Excellence : Corner Cast designed & manufactured a mining truck maintenance facility comprised of 16 modified ISO containers which were designed, engineered, fabricated & furnished in Montreal, and then transported & installed 5000 km south on a mine in Suriname in the Amazon jungle.
The two main design challenges were that the units needed to remain transportable using standard intermodal transport and, the Corner Cast Hybrid concept, developed for the cold North, had to be adjusted to the warm and humid rainy season in Suriname; be hurricane proof and provide proper cooling and water drainage.
The building accommodates all specialized equipment for the truck maintenance. Custom anchoring systems were designed for each equipment to withstand the handling through ports and unpaved roads. Finally the building housed, two fully furnished office modules, a bathroom with a shower, a lube room gravity fed from totes placed on the second floor, compressor room, oil waste storage and parts storage.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : All 16 containers in this complex were modified & outfitted in an indoor production facility in an effort to minimize the equipment, manpower circulation and time on site. All equipment suppliers were sourced locally in Montreal, Canada, where they installed and tested the equipment prior to transport. This also greatly reduced the mobilizations to site which were very costly as this was during Covid-19 and the site was in the amazon jungle.
The structure was designed to be re-locatable at the end of the project life cycle, which allows the buyer to spread the cost of the asset over several projects thus reducing capital investment long term.
Each individual unit was transported to site for approximately 2,500$ USD using road & maritime transportation. This enabled the client to save immensely on logistical costs versus conventional construction methods.
Engineering Firm Name : PSE Consulting Engineering Inc
Green Building Description : This facility is comprised of recycled shipping containers. By giving the containers a second life, and using the interior space as functional areas the re-used structure has been optimally utilized. Each unit was also predesigned to be re-used once again after the project life cycle is complete as it was designed to meet the required building codes for many of their international sites/operations.
LED lighting, highly insulated wall assemblies, and efficient ventilation systems were also employed in the design to ensure the building requires a small amount of energy for the employees to comfortably operate within it.

Project Location City : Saramacca Gold Mine
Technical Innovation : Due to their structural integrity, the use of shipping containers enabled the client to pre-install specialized Canadian equipment within the units prior to transport to site. This greatly reduced the number of international travel & mobilizations by these equipment suppliers. This allowed the client to continue the project while international travel had become very complicated and time consuming due to the COVID pandemic.
The containers were also optimally used to support the roof structure, effectively acting as the foundation for the whole structure.
In terms of sustainability all of the structure was built from used shipping containers, which granted the containers a second life & meant the structural steel of the foundation used in this complex was recycled.
The design & transportability of this complex created a sustainable & operationally efficient complex for the client and its users.
