Hood College Athletic Facility
Additional Info
Award Winner : Mark Line Industries, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This field house was needed as an integral part of a full-scale athletic field renovation project for a collegiate athletic program. The modular building will serve as the male and female locker, shower and restroom facilities, as well as an equipment storage room. A gated breeze-way allows the facility to be locked during off hours and provides a natural separation between the locker rooms and storage facility. The site-built gable roof provided the finishing touches and eliminated any appearance of a modular building.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : An existing natural gas line at the site influenced the use of a high efficiency gas water heater. When taking into consideration the quantity and frequency of the shower usage, the cost savings achieved by using gas instead of electric are expected to be considerable. In addition to resisting mold growth, the inherent durability of the epoxy floor and fiberglass wall and ceiling panels will provide years of virtually maintenance free use.

Technical Innovation : Careful consideration of interior finishes was needed due to the use of the building and the constant presence of water and moisture. As a result, moisture resistant lights and fiberglass wall and ceiling panels were used in the shower and restroom areas. The poured epoxy floor used throughout the building serves as both a waterproof flooring application, as well as providing a durable surface to withstand the heavy foot traffic from athletic cleats. The design and layout of the building allowed for the epoxy flooring to be completely installed in the factory, thus eliminating the need for any additional labor on site to complete the flooring.
