Award Winner : Vanguard Modular Building Systems, LLC
Architectural Excellence : This 4,536 sq. ft. addition provides the school with 3 Kindergarten classrooms, restrooms, janitor's room, and entrance vestibules. The 84' x 54' modular classroom wing is joined to the existing building through a site-built conditioned corridor. The well-appointed modular addition has a multi-toned hardi-panel exterior with reglets, and the roofing consists of a heat-welded PTO system.
The 6 classroom modules were crane set on a concrete stem-wall foundation, including interior piers. The building has a rainwater collection system for storm water management, and a retaining wall was installed for rain water diversion. Final touches of pavement, sod, and landscaping create a welcoming and beautiful surrounding for learning.
Programmable thermostats control RTUs for an energy efficient learning space. The combination of VCT and ceramic tile provides easy-to-clean floors for simple care, while painted sheet rock, 6' windows, and acoustical ceilings accentuate the building's permane
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Prevailing wage expenses can mount quickly in construction, driving up the overall cost of a project. Use of off-site construction, which allowed for delivery of a building that was 85% complete, greatly reduced the prevailing wages associated with remaining on-site work. The short project schedule also helped further reduce prevailing wage expenses, creating an overall cost-effective building solution.
Entrance vestibules were installed at either end of the building to reducing air infiltration into the building, decreasing building energy consumption needs and associated costs. Also, the conditioned corridor connection to the existing building decreases the use for exterior access, further reducing the intrusion of outside air and climate-control energy usage.

Technical Innovation : Hoover Elementary is situated in a highly populated, residential area that is interconnected with narrow streets, steep hills, and sharp turns. Using off-site construction only required delivery of 6 modules, minimizing the overall impact and inconvenience of construction noise and traffic burden on the surrounding community.
Exceptional time constraints required special planning to carefully coordinate off-site construction with on-site installation of certain building components. This initiative ultimately resulted in the building being ready on-time for the school's opening. It also demonstrated the extensive flexibility of using modular.
The new addition is situated directly between the existing building and the playground. It was critical that this building be completed within the short time-frame allotted, so that school operations could proceed on-time, without disturbing the students. Off-site construction was the only method that could be used to get this done.
