Architectural Excellence : This 3-module 2,464 sf R2 modular fire house was designed as a shared facility between two different agencies in the same County. Both Fire Rescue and EMS share this station using a unique floor plan that accommodates two teams of first responder's during their shift each week. When eight people live together under one roof each day, it is imperative that the building support individual space, security, and privacy as much as possible. The interior space consists of separate sleeping and restroom areas on opposite ends of the building for privacy separation between the two departments. The living space is located in the center of the building allowing for multiple kitchen and living room occupants without crowding. Eight separate locking food panties,(2)refrigerators,and (2)computer-study rooms are integrated into the shared space. The exterior has a clay brick wainscote below seamless masonry stucco walls. The red galvalume roof accents stucco banding and the street side facade.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The cost effective aspect of this building is the ability to open a new critical use building that meets the standards of conventionally built buildings at a lower cost,with less management from the owner. The upgrade level of materials, function and aesthetics used in this building have set an example for other fire departments to use similar construction. Materials and assemblies were upgraded beyond the typical due to the extreme 24/7 use by fire / EMS occupants and local governments desire that this permanent facility have a minimum lifespan of 30 years. Owner data shows 5-10 year maintenance costs directly relate to the quality of construction and not negligence, thus all finishes were carefully selected based upon past experience of similar occupancy.Solid oak cabinets replaced inexpensive melamine-laminate construction, 18” luxury vinyl tile floors replaced commercial carpet, solid surface counter tops replaced laminate, and grade 4 porcelain tile was used in all wet areas.

Green Building Description : Interior comfort features were imperative due to high occupant usage 365 days/yr. A fire station never closes so equipment must be reliable, efficient, and cost effective. E.G. basic pkg wall HVAC units were replaced with 18 seer high efficiency split systems and zone ducting with programmable controls. Air handlers are located in a mechanical room along with the laundry and fire sprinkler riser. The roof is typically the area that endures the most heat gain in a structure. This particular roof includes R37 insulation, an 18-inch eve all sides using a 24 ga standing seam galvalume panel with with a radiant barrier under- layment. Roof insulation is located between the trusses under the roof deck to help condition the attic, thus lowering temperature around the HVAC ducting. The adjoining covered porch on the exterior (6’x44’)was designed as an expanded shaded living area with no impact on utility costs. Technical Innovation : Fire Station 90-102 depicts a wide range of offsite capability and technical resources to deliver a conventional-looking building that functions well in a harsh-use occupancy. The solid pour concrete foundation, supports a lightweight concrete floor that has a 1% slope to floor drains. This is ideal in a water prevalent (8-10 showers per day) environment. The tankless water heater saves space, energy and gives 9 GPM hot water to users at any time. Both of these investments are essential for use in locker rooms, fire houses, and similar environments. The truss package is an easy to assemble pre-eng system that is composed of shipped components and can be assembled in 3 days. The kitchen is factory equipped with all millwork, appliances, and a UL approved commercial fire suppression range hood for maximum safety consideration. This structure has an R37 roof, R19 wall (6 inch) and R19 floor. Location of glazed area was confined to less direct sun exposure to help save energy costs.
