Laundry, Lavatory and Shower Units Installed for isolated use during COVID-19 pandemic on the Stoney Nakoda reserve
Additional Info
Award Winner : Black Diamond Group
Architectural Excellence : The installation included one shower complex, one lavatory, and one laundry unit. The units have an antique linen finish with Black Diamond red strip across the top and a black strip across the bottom, a characteristic of BOXX Modular and Black Diamond Group Workforce Accommodation units which complemented the school’s brick construction. The shower unit includes 12 individual showers and bathrooms, plus an additional larger bathroom area in each side, and two laundry rooms housing three washer/dryer combo units in each. The lavatory units house seven toilet stalls, four urinals, wall-mounted sinks with on-demand hot water and standalone potable water tanks. The laundry unit also includes standalone water tanks, basin sinks and four washer/dryer pairs. Each of the three units is fitted with enhanced ventilation systems for clean-air circulation, hand sanitizer stations, standard propane-powered heat and electrical connections for power.?
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The laundry, lavatory and washroom units were sourced from our existing fleet compromising of BOXX Modular and Workforce Accommodations fleet, requiring no new construction and significantly decreased project costs. Since the trailers were placed on the Stoney Nakoda Tribal Community’s property (Morley Community School), additional land did not have to be rented, translating to significant cost savings. The client saved money by dealing with us as an exclusive provider as well, as the units arrived fully outfitted with all the amenities – showers, toilets, sinks and laundry pairs, leaving them with nothing else to source. Black Diamond Group even provided refills for soap and hand sanitizer as well as a deep COVID 19 cleaning before handover to the final user.
Green Building Description : The laundry, lavatory and shower unit install displayed several improvements over traditional buildings. First, each unit included standalone water tanks to prevent use of on-site water resources and to encourage more conservative water use, each unit was also outfitted with enhanced ventilation systems for clean-air circulation. Additionally, each unit was an existing modular unit and therefore no new resources were required to create it and no new resources will be required to maintain it for future projects. Finally, each unit is outfitted with high efficiency furnaces to reduce the waste of resources.

Technical Innovation : As COVID-19 reached Canada, the Stoney Nakoda Tribal Community needed overflow amenities like showers, washrooms, and laundry areas for the community to use in case the facilities within the school were not sufficient for community spread of COVID19. Using a blend of BOXX Modular units (one lavatory unit and one laundry unit) and workforce accommodation units (wet shower units), we were able to provide a solution to address the concern of the nation and stay one step ahead of the pandemic. Black Diamond Group’s workforce accommodation units are typically used when assembling workforce camps and lodging for large energy and resources projects but proved useful for providing this need to the community.
