Architectural Excellence : This structure was designed to maximize the small group relationship between the teacher and students who have special educational requirements. The floor plan was designed to accommodate groups of 1-8 students preventing distractions which larger classrooms may cause.The extra interior cabinetry was provided to improve classroom order and prevent distractions to the students. A combination of 2x6 wall studs, double 5/8” gypsum layers, CDX plywood sheathing, R-19, and house wrap was utilized to decrease outside distractions both in noise control and thermal comfort. Furthermore, to allow for more privacy for the individual classrooms, ½” soundboard was added to improve privacy from one classroom to the next. In addition, ½” vinyl covered gypsum was utilized over wood paneling. We also decided to use vinyl lap siding and gabled shingle roof blending into the residential neighborhood. Thereby increasing the local residence acceptance. Also, this would make it easier to be relocated

Cost Energy Effectiveness : As previously stated, the 2x6 wall studs allowed for more insulation at a minimal cost over standard 2x4’s. The house wrap prevents high winds from infiltrating the interior space. The extra sound insulation between the rooms coupled with the solid core interior doors allows heat and AC to be shut off in the classrooms not being used for a period of time. Thereby, conditioning less cubic space when warranted. Furthermore, a floor cold air return was included to provide the most efficient HVAC system possible. Non-stratifying air provides not only more comfort but also an increase attention span for the students.

Technical Innovation : The combination of 2x6 studs, extra insulation, and house wrap make this structure more cost efficient to operate the HVAC system. In addition, the extra layers of fire rated gypsum sheathing not only provide sound insulation but a higher level of fire protection to the Modular and neighboring buildings. In addition, rolling shutters were installed to improve off hours’ security and fire protection.
