Malt Brewery Control Room
Additional Info
Award Winner : Wilmot Modular Structures, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This building is being used as a Control Room for a Malt Brewery. The customer requested that we use as much recyclable materials as possible. So we chose an 8’x40’ shipping container and broke up pallets to create the wall finish and countertops. The exterior also helps blend the building into the highly industrial environment. Steel exterior doors were installed for durability and Low E Windows were installed to provide protection from the sun’s glare and heat in the lab area. The layout was designed so the Control Room is in the center of the activities required to run the plant – the Barley Lab and the IT Server Room.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Using shipping crates and pallets for the interior walls and countertops netted the Customer approximately 20% savings in material costs. Using a one-tripper shipping container saved the customer approximately 40% of the cost of a similar sized building built by other methods. LED lights saved money on utilities.

Technical Innovation : The customer was looking for recyclability as a key component to their new building. We used wood from pallets to line the walls and shipping crates for countertops. They also required a large amount of electric and data cables to run from the Lab thru the Control Room into the IT Room. Additional J Boxes and conduit were installed. LED Lights and Low E Windows were installed for energy efficiency as well as additional insulation in all the walls to help maintain a controlled temperature. The customer requested three separate A/C units so each room had its own dedicated air conditioning with separate controls since each area has a unique air flow requirement.
