Marine Corps Base Quantico
Additional Info
Award Winner : ModSpace
Architectural Excellence : The Quantico U.S. Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va., needed an extensive expansion of their current barracks space to house the 600 incoming Officer Candidate School recruits who were on board to occupy the barracks in the coming spring. The USMC needed to offer immediate and adequate living space for the recruits involved in the Grow the Force Program. ModSpace provided 44,000 sq. ft. of open bay barracks space consisting of five 176' x 50' buildings comprised of 65 14’x50’ modular units. Per the floor plan, each building is separated into 2 spaces, each with sleeping quarters, showers, restrooms and laundry facilities.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Partnering with Clayton Homes on this project, ModSpace & Clayton worked closely together to meet the aggressive timeline of 120 days to complete the barracks in time for marine troop occupations. In addition to meeting the aggressive project timeline, the foundation system used in this project saved the government tens of thousands of dollars – as well as several weeks of overall construction time - bringing the project in below the proposed budget. The foundation system wasn’t the only ModSpace method that conserved cost and kept time to a minimum. Standard building materials utilized in the construction, including wood and tile flooring, steel steps, and a commercial steel exterior to the buildings were all employed as well.

Technical Innovation : Because construction was taking place in the winter months, factors such as cold temperatures and impeding weather conditions were a challenge. Not only were the standard electrical, foundation, and building plans necessary, but all plans needed to go through the state of Virginia for approval. The five modular buildings were constructed one at a time. Attention to detail was crucial, as each of the 65 barracks modules were assembled to create five buildings. ModSpace used an ABS padding foundation on top of layers of gravel. The gravel needed to be filled in several times in order to create a smooth flooring surface on the permeable ground.
