Architectural Excellence : Maryland State Highway Administration (MDSHA) had an immediate requirement for temporary buildings throughout the state due to rapidly growing and changing highway needs. To solve their immediate needs they turned to single—wide buildings that would serve as Inspection & Weigh Stations.
This particular building was unique, because it required a “bump-out area and window,” so the police officers would have an optimal line of vision to vehicles entering the station. This “bump-out” area also served as the location for the special equipment necessary to operate the inspections.
The building was designed to operate inspections; as well as administrative work for the Maryland State Police. The layout included a general visitor’s area, the inspection & weigh “control” station area, a restroom and private office.
This new building was designed, built and installed in less than forty-five days.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The “cookie-cutter” approach helped MDSHA save time and money on the design, specifications and engineering for their different sites; while still allowing flexibility for specific needs at those other sites.
MDSHA also saved time and money by minimizing disturbances on their site with the installation of the completed single-wide building. With the exception of the “bump-out area and window,” 95% of the building was completed in the factory.
Energy efficiency has accomplished by constructing the buildings with (a) R-19 Insulation in the floor, (b) R-13 Insulation in the exterior walls, (c) R-19 Insulation in the roof, and (d) Programmable Thermostats.

Technical Innovation : Most impressive with this building was the design and engineering of the prefabricated “bump-out area and window.” Due to shipping width constraints, this area of the building was pre-engineered into sections at the manufacturing plant. It was then delivered to the site within the modular unit and site installed in one day. The prefabricated design included the interior & exterior finishes, electric, lights and other, fixtures. This process proved to expedite the project installations and make it most cost-effective.
With this project completed, MDSHA took advantage of this particular building design and integrated the overall process as duplicate buildings for other Inspection & Weigh Stations. In other words, they took advantage of the modular “cookie-cutter” approach and built more buildings at different sites.
