Architectural Excellence : The project was a critical first step in a series of renovations and relocations at the National Naval Medical Campus in Bethesda, MD. The government had to move existing medical center staff into the new temporary space before Thanksgiving 2008 to allow ample time for staff to transition from existing buildings to the medical swing space, without interruption of on-going medical services. The two story building was designed to blend in with the medical campus look and feel as well as provide a seamless transition for the medical staff from the existing buildings to the medical swing space. Programming for the space to accomplish the correct patient flow incorporated the end users at all levels. The building features include X-Ray room with lead lined walls/floor/ceiling, a commercial accordion wall, vaulted ceilings in fitness area, 11’ ceilings, interior automatic sliding glass doors, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, and general treatment rooms.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The ability to have a fully functioning medical facility operating seamlessly in less than 70 days was the biggest contributor to the overall cost effectiveness of the project. This project acted as a critical project milestone to the start of construction for the new hospital by rotating outpatient departments and personnel. The dollars saved using this approach outweighed the actual projects costs. As a result of the success of this project, the modular medical swing space approach is being adopted by other large general contractors at VA Hospitals as a cost savings method. This approach enables normal clinical operations to continue with minimal impact on services and reduce overall project schedules due to the speed associated with modular construction. Furthermore, building design requirements had to meet ASHREA 90 standards for energy efficiencies.

Technical Innovation : The 2– two story structure totaling 38 modules was designed to meet the needs of the government medical services as well as minimize site disturbance. A Helical Pier Foundation System was engineered to minimize spoils and limit the overall site disturbance for both installation and the buildings removal. Interior features of the building include 11’ vaulted ceilings in the fitness area to meet user specifications while using a modular solution. Automatic sliding glass doors were widely used to increase staff and patient flow in otherwise tight spaces. All utility connections and fire alarm/sprinkler were handled to single point connections by Williams Scotsman.
