New York City Beaches Restoration Project
Additional Info
Award Winner : iBuilt
Architectural Excellence : Modules were created to rebuild the public restrooms and lifeguard facilities after the destruction from Superstorm Sandy on the public beaches of New York City. Units were constructed of heavy structural steel with special provisions for the salt water and sand. The units were constructed with decorative tile finishes and stainless steel accessories as well as a corrugated stainless steel exterior skin.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This was a very expensive project. Unfortunately, it was not ultimately cost effective due to the need to get the modules completed and delivered in a very limited amount of time. The need to work 24 hours a day and seven days a week required an extreme amount of overhead costs. This fast paced environment also caused more risk with safety and protection of workers. Having said that, the limited time to build the project required that the project be built modular. This project could never have come close to the finish date that was achieved if it had been built completely on the project sites. The material procurement timelines alone would have caused many delays and much reworking.

Technical Innovation : This project required a very fast paced construction and production schedule, one that was quite unrealistic. We ran our production facility with two 12-hour shifts and utilized trades persons and subcontracted crews to supplement our employee work force. In the field, several of the modules had to be delivered to the beach heads by barge and crane lifted on to a special transporter that traveled via remote control over several miles of heavy duty sand matting. All of the modules were delivered into the city limits during the middle of the night requiring that erection and crane crews work through the night to install the modules on to the waiting concrete pilings.
