OHSU - MRI
Additional Info
Award Winner : Modern Building Systems, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This 2,520 square foot, 3 module Magnetic Resonance Imagine facility was part of a full turnkey construction project, including permits, site preparation, concrete walkways, stairs, handicap-accessible ramps, alarms, utility extensions and connections. Modular construction was chosen due to site restrains and time concerns. A main concern for the customer was to have facility blend in with other structures on the campus. An environmentally friendly panel siding was chosen and the walls are one-hour fire rated. The dormered entry was factory built as part of the roof structure. All interior finishes are medical grade, such as stainless steel cabinets and vinyl flooring.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building was designed and manufactured to meet the most current commercial codes administered by the Sate of Oregon. Time restrains were the major concern for the customer and timely completion of the project was imperative to keep the overall medical facility operational. Modular construction was the only construction method that was able to meet the required timeline and provide extensive saving to customer by not having to outsource MRI services. To be able to install almost every feature of the building in the factory allowed the customer to save on additional costs that would have been incurred due to State required wages for site labor. Building cost was an important reason for choosing modular construction as the structure is scheduled to be relocated to another location in 3-4 years after initial installation.

Technical Innovation : The stem wall foundation located on a hillside had to include a large concrete pad, called plinth, to minimize vibration and accommodate the installation and operation of the MRI. In addition the roof had to have a hatched opening. This was to allow for lifting and placing the multi-million dollar MRI equipment onto the concrete pad. The magnet for the MRI weighs 28,600 pounds and is the latest and most sophisticated MRI in Oregon. The chilled water-cooling system for the MRI equipment was factory installed as well. The interior walls around the MRI unit have a 1” thick annealed steel and copper shielding underneath the wall finish. The suspended ceiling was special as well, as there could not be any steel inside the rooms.
