Oil and Gas Command Center
Additional Info
Award Winner : Northgate Industries Ltd.
Architectural Excellence : A major oil and gas producer requested a module be constructed with the ability to act as “Command Center” for all drilling and exploration in remote site locations. The geologist, field operator and engineer that utilize the module require complete and full services in an area not to exceed a specific template to allow for a restrictive transportation routes. Each office area is totally self sufficient and includes hard wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances, residential plumbing fixtures and furnishings coupled with a completely functional office environment. Consideration for the mobility of the module is critical in the design stage as the modules usually moves every twenty eight days in extreme winter weather conditions on ice roads. The building protocol requires the steel framework, floor, wall and roof framing systems and all mechanical, electrical and architectural components to be integrated as one internal system.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The provision for the design required three complete operating office areas with facilities to allow for operation and communication with the home office. The self contained heating, domestic water and electrical systems alleviate the need for remote utility connections that are fiscally irresponsible. The allowance is for an average fourteen day utility usage before replenishing. The fourteen day duration is achieved utilizing 90% efficient sealed combustion furnaces and 80% efficient direct vent hot water tanks. The LPG heating and plumbing system ease the strain on the power generation thus reducing the need for frequent diesel fuel storage.

Technical Innovation : The function of a command center is to provide live communication from any drilling location to head office. The distance can be formidable. The module is complete with satellite and radio communication that is integrated in the factory prior to shipment and provides high speed communication in any location. The western Canadian oil and gas industry operates during dead of winter in extreme isolation. The lack of access to basic utility services is problematic and is combated by equipping the module with self contained water and LPG fuel storage systems via compact tanks that are readily accessible once the need to replenish arrives.
