Additional Info
Award Winner : Horizon North Logistics Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This permanent lodge provides world class workforce housing for oil development in Northern Alberta and replicates a five-star hotel experience. In total, five two-storey lodges were completed, each with 20 modules and 25 private rooms per floor (21,834 SF per Lodge; 290 SF per room). Each lodge features a unique lounge option of weight room, cardio gym, library, movie theatre or games room. Steel siding was selected for the exterior finish for its durability and low-maintenance qualities. Attention to detail on the interior includes increased sound proofing between rooms, individual heating and cooling systems, textured drywall ceilings, walls finished with 20 oz. commercial paper on tape and filled drywall, solid wood furnishings, solid surface countertops, crown mouldings and wood trim detailing.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Modular construction allowed the lodges to be completed in significantly less time than traditional construction and allowed continuation of the offsite work during the cold, northern winter environment. Environmental engineering included the use of water efficient plumbing fixtures and compact fluorescent lighting. An innovative electrical shut-down relay system prevents the PTAC units from operating in cooling mode when the backup generators are engaged, significantly reducing the electrical loading, generator sizing and fuel requirements.

Technical Innovation : The sleeping rooms were completely finished in the manufacturing plant, including loading of furniture, to minimize offsite construction. Double wall sheathing and additional wall bracing were designed to support the shear loads and prevent cracking of the finished tape and filled wall and ceiling finishes during the approximate 970 km (600 mile) delivery to the remote site. Sound proofing between rooms of STC 66 was achieved with a combination of double wall systems, staggered studs, sound proof sheeting and sound insulation.
