Parkhome Isolation Ward Appelsbosch Hospital
Additional Info
Award Winner : Modular Site Solutions (Pty) Ltd.
Architectural Excellence : The build was designed as an isolation ward, built in line with Department of Health stringent spacing and operational requirements. Consisting of 4 double and 4 single bed isolation rooms with ante rooms to each and staff facilities to suit. Installed at each bed is oxygen gas supply, vacuum suction and nurse call instrumentation. Built on the hospital grounds, allowing direct access of patients and staff to the new ward and located next to the hospital allowed for the sharing of walkways and services. The building had to adhere to stringent pressure requirements with regulated HVAC systems whilst negative pressures within the isolation rooms was crucial. Double doors were built with unequal door leaves to allow for movement of hospital beds throughout. All medical gases and vacuum suction, HVAC and electrical services were installed within the trussed ceiling, designed by Modular Site solutions to allow for walking loads above with trap doors for ease of maintenance.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Modular Site Solutions was awarded the tender based on the best price submitted. To reduce transport costs of prefabricated sections, teams were established on site for the duration of the contract and erection occurred in position. The hospital provided facilities for the contractor to further reduce on site costs which was passed onto the client. Local community hire from the surrounding rural area also assisted with cheaper artisan labour rates whilst ensuring transfer of modular knowledge to the community. The end user was then afforded the opportunity to avoid hefty establishment costs by similar contractors going forward and can opt to use the local labour to extend and repair said builds. The medical gas plant with vacuum suction was built within a 20ft container which was the most cost-effective solution to provide an open airflow, but secure structure to house the necessary equipment.

Green Building Description : The brief specified speed and price as the prerequisite however the modular build materials used promote green building initiatives below. Hot water from heat pumps to ensure better power efficiency. HVAC regulated by one central system which aligned with the pressure requirements for Isolation wards and also reduced power usage. 40mm Insulation panels were used in build. This regulates temperatures and reduces HVAC power usage. The insulation panel green properties are Aluzinc Panels Supplied. Aluzinc is fully Recyclable
Iso Moulders. Extruded Polystyrene is fully Recyclable ArcelorMittal. External Aluzinc Coil is Environment friendly. IBR roof cladding allows for air travel between the sheeting and the roof, helping to cool the units in the hot temperatures, 90 Fahrenheit in summer, experienced in the area. LED lighting balances natural light from the large windows.
A recycled 20ft container was converted into the medical gas plant equipped with vacuum pump to suit ward needs.

Technical Innovation : Agreed contract duration was 6 weeks from award with daily penalties introduced thereafter. Timing was crucial and the chassis was prefabricated into transportable sections with other modular pieces delivered to site for joining and erection in place. Focus was too erect the structure and close the ceilings to allow finishes and furnishing to commence within, whilst roofing, services, windows and doors continued concurrently. The ceiling chosen allowed for construction loads above. This afforded the team the ability to install ducting and services above while finishing teams worked below.
A long lead item for this project was the vacuum pump and manifolds for the medical gas plant. It was proposed and agreed that this plant will be built concurrently at the contractor’s yard within a 20ft container which was converted to specifications with unobstructed airflow whilst ensuring secured lockable area.
