Personnel Storage Unit
Additional Info
Award Winner : Wilmot Modular Structures, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This building was designed for use as a personnel storage unit with lockable steel mesh lockers and cubbies for personal effects. The exterior siding is 28 gauge ribbed steel and matches surrounding facilities. The finish and the upgraded commercial grade steel door are designed to take the expected abuse. The (2) windows used were 6/0x4/0 fixed vinyl DIG windows to allow for maximum visibility into the shop work area. An IPO type frame construction was used for the unit to sit on the concrete in the shop of the existing building. That allows them to easily place the unit, and move it accordingly in the future. ½” painted raw gypsum was used as the interior wall covering to provide additional rigidity and a more aesthetically pleasing look than paneling. Corrugated steel decking was used as a sheathing on the roof to maximize rigidity and structural integrity. The factory installed black mesh walls for the storage area. and ¾” painted plywood shelving for cubbie bins.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building is located inside a warehouse facility so the customer was able to save money by choosing a less expensive roofing material. A central HVAC unit with thermostat was installed to regulate heat and air. Lights were minimized by adding wire mesh partitions which allowed light to travel between storage spaces and large windows installed to provide natural light into building.

Technical Innovation : This building was constructed in the winter months in a climate controlled production environment instead of stick-built outside. The use of steel mesh walls provided visibility of each space which enhanced security of the employees’ personal items. It also helped save space inside the module which allowed for more storage areas. The customer wanted a permanent facility, but also needed the flexibility of changing its location as their operations changed. By building the frame with forklift slots, the customer now has flexibility and ease of transport if the layout of their facility changes.
