Piglet Nutrition and Cognition Laboratory
Additional Info
Award Winner : Art's-Way Scientific, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : The University of Illinois and Art’s Way Scientific successfully developed a 2516 SF biomedical swine research lab comprised of 16 x 74 and 18 x 74 sections, to support research on developing an understanding of how early-life nutrition effects brain development in infants. The research uses the domestic pig as a translatable biomedical model for young infants. A dedicated noise and vibration controlled behavioral suite allows researchers to assess cognitive development using specialized behavior equipment and mazes. Individual rearing cages allow monitoring and observation of newborn pigs with automated delivery of milk replacer and logging of environmental controls. Features include negative pressure rooms, temperature-controlled animal housing area, cold storage, formula mixing/dispensing and video/ data capabilities. The mechanical systems are contained in a separate environment. Coverings include seamless, anti-bacterial fiberglass reinforced epoxy wall system and epoxy flooring.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Building research infrastructure in an academic setting at a State University is costly. By selecting the modular building, the time line of the lab was greatly expedited, moving from the design phase to placing animals on study in less than 9 months. Use of traditional construction would add at least another year to the process. Moreover, based on current estimates involving traditional construction of similar biomedical research for pigs, use of modular construction saved approximately 30%. Elements including semi-surface mounted electrical, plumbing and fixtures minimized cost, and cable tray systems carrying low voltage and data throughout the lab permit flexibility in configuration for each research project. Washable filters are used in the air handling unit to cut maintenance cost due to increased change out from site conditions.

Technical Innovation : This lab was designed with the comfort of both animals and researchers in mind. A dedicated 100% outside air handling unit with a supply fan, a preheat coil with face and bypass, a DX cooling coil and variable frequency drives serves air to constant volume air valves and heating coils serving each individual space to control air flow and temperatures. The system is sized to maintain 80 degrees +/- 5 degrees with ramp heat up for the study duration and hold relative humidity 30-70. The BAS controls the animal environment providing historical and trending data vital to the research. Environmental conditions are also monitored and trended at the animal cages. Outfitted with a wide variety of sensors and cameras, this unique facility allows world class research to be shared with collaborators around the world.
