Architectural Excellence : Shirley Chisholm State Park was built in 2020 as part of the Vital Brooklyn Initiative. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was placed on an accelerated timeline to transform the former landfill into a 407-acre park - New York City's largest state park.
Several of Cassone’s most popular offerings were used for the construction and beautification of Shirley Chisholm State Park. A total of fifteen units were delivered to the site, including three Modular Buildings, five Ground Level Storage Containers, and seven Office Containers which were all equipped for the continued use of the park staff and visitors.
Overall, these units brought more than 7,000 sq. ft. into the park. The Modular Buildings and Office Containers were delivered fully turnkey including ADA ramps and canopies for the Modular Buildings. The exterior of all the units were wrapped on-site by the park with artwork by Brooklyn muralist Danielle Mastrion.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : With the park construction taking place in two phases, relocatable Modular Buildings, Office Containers, and Ground Level Storage Units helped keep both current and future construction costs low due to the fact that the park staff and construction teams would not be tied down to permanent locations for the units. Additionally, the flexibility of using modular solutions allowed for construction milestones to take place on time and within budget constraints.
A custom guard booth was also requested. Cassone’s solution offered a cost-effective and unique option. Built out of a pre-existing 8’x10’ shipping container, this guard booth was needed to be fully outfitted with extra data outlets, 360-degree view windows, LED lighting and specific door placement. All the elements continued with the theme of energy-efficiency. Placed at the entryway of the park, this unit would be one of the first to greet visitors.

Technical Innovation : With the entire premise of the park renovation centered on reclaiming a formerly contaminated property, innovation and effectiveness was as the top of everyone’s mind when participating in the project. Additionally, being a Women-owned Business Enterprise added another level of pride for Cassone, given that the park was dedicated to the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, a ground-breaking New Yorker who was the first black woman elected to the United States Congress.
