St. Mary's Science Lab
Additional Info
Award Winner : WillScot Mobile Mini
Architectural Excellence : This modular building was designed with a barrel tile roof and stucco exterior wall finish and set on a concrete stem wall foundation to blend in nicely with existing 60 year old school buildings on the site. This private School is over 135 years old with mission style classroom buildings built in the early 1950’s. The recently installed modular science lab classroom building sits 6’ feet away from the adjacent kindergarten classroom building. This science lab is a 1-hour, type V rated structure and features a gabled 3/12-pitch roof with eves and overhangs. Exterior stucco finish mimics that of the existing buildings, and is painted to match the original existing school buildings.
The interior is fished with VCT flooring, extensive custom built base cabinetry with 7 stainless steel sinks, and granite countertops. Adjacent to the main classroom area are two restrooms that can be closed off from a class in session with an additional separate entrance.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This science lab classroom for school age children was designed, built and installed, including work done on site, stucco, and barrel tile roofing, gutters, downspouts, flooring, custom cabinetry and sinks, and counter tops for approximately $165 per square foot. Additional costs incurred to complete the project included costs for the concrete ADA ramp/landings/steps, and landscaping work.

Technical Innovation : The 3/12-piched gable roof structure for this modular building was designed and built in the factory as part of the rest of the structure rather than having roof trusses designed and built separately and installed on site. The roof structure was engineered to accommodate a real barrel tile clay roof. The stucco exterior was installed on site over OSB installed in the factory. A 3-coat stucco system was used with a finish to match as closely as possible that of the adjacent school buildings. The HVAC system includes two wall hung 5 ton Bard heat pumps rather than 3 units, to accommodate an entry door to the restroom area foyer on the end wall on one end module. The building is also equipped with 8 ceiling fans ducted through to roof jacks and ducted with dampers to preserve the 1 hour type V rating on the building.
