Architectural Excellence : Overcrowding at Summit Christian Academy was forcing elementary aged students to relocate off of the school’s campus. The client was renting classroom space from a local church, five miles away, and transporting elementary students and teachers to that location. To eliminate the inconvenience and cost of transportation, M SPACE provided pre-leased modular classrooms and a new restroom unit to form an 8,640 square foot complex. Centrally located on the existing school’s campus, the complex includes eight classrooms, an administrative office, student and faculty restrooms and a janitor’s closet. Smart Panel siding over an approved weather resistant barrier and exterior paint were chosen to blend with the existing campus and protect the building from harsh outdoor conditions. The front entrance features glass doors with vision panels, decks, ramps and landscaping, giving the complex the look and feel of a new stick-built facility.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Pre-leased modular buildings saved the client time and money on new construction. M SPACE began refurbing the units in April, built the new restroom in June and completed the classroom complex in mid-September, much faster than conventional construction would have provided. Repurposing units provided a central location for all grade levels and the costs and inconvenience of relocating students off-site were quickly eliminated. Vinyl composition tile was used throughout the complex for a more cost effective floor choice. To further save money, the foundation was built high enough for the client to store things underneath. Comparable to a basement, this added space eliminated the costs of purchasing storage units.

Technical Innovation : M SPACE took 10 units from one pre-leased building to form the eight classrooms and converted a unit from another to form the front entrance hallway. The units were configured so the hallway unit could be inserted into the middle. A new restroom unit was added to the end of the complex and provided the needed exterior wall. The classroom complex sits on a perimeter frame for a stronger building. M SPACE poured a permanent foundation and craned the units in place to accommodate the steep slope of the job site. Unique to this complex is the oversized classrooms. Each classroom accommodates 36 occupants and is 727 square feet. This was possible by renovating 10 pre-leased units into eight classrooms. Oversized double-pane insulated glass windows were used to increase the flow of natural light and reduce heat transfer. Seven-day programmable thermostats were added onto the existing HVAC units for energy savings.
