Swing Space at the VA Hospital
Additional Info
Award Winner : Nadler Modular Structures
Architectural Excellence : This government healthcare project involved twenty-five modular units; each tailored to the specific requirements of the Veteran’s Association and built to ensure longevity and structural integrity in a tropical environment. There are 22 - 24x36’ modular offices with 3 - 10x36 modular restroom facilities. The state-of-the-art office buildings were manufactured for the VA Caribbean Healthcare system in San Juan, PR. Internally each complex is comprised of 2-3 offices with built-in cubicle rooms. The building was manufactured with the knowledge that it is going to an area with very high humidity as well as a large population of termites. As there were a large number of federal employees with the same ranking - it was very important that the space be evenly divided with a certain square footage allocated per employee while still maintaining comfort, ease of accessibility, safety, modern/clean design, and energy efficiency throughout the buildings.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Nadler’s strong ecosystem of vendors and partners translates to higher-quality manufacturing at prices that meet or beat most competitors. In this case, as the modular buildings were traveling via boat from the Port of Jacksonville, FL to the Port of San Juan, PR (through relationships established through the MBI), new contacts and referrals with major ocean liners were leveraged to transport the modular buildings. Furthermore, being that there were a total of 47 modules needing to be shipped, volume based discounts was negotiated resulting in very competitive pricing. All of these savings were then passed onto the client, the result of which was a superior final product at a very cost effective price. Furthermore, the modular design and durable manufacturing allows the VA Health System to relocate the buildings with ease should the need arise.

Technical Innovation : To contend with environmental conditions in the Caribbean, special attention was given to the materials the building was constructed with, which was guided by the engineering staff in the factory as well as on the ground at the VA healthcare center. As mentioned previously the two main conditions that required special attention were humidity and termites. To combat the termite issue, custom metal studs were used in the walls and a steel bottom board lining the trailer’s floor to create a barrier that the termites could not penetrate. To address the humidity issue, special Bard HVAC’s designed specifically for the area were used, providing an innovative and cost-effective cooling and ventilating system for the complexes.
