Architectural Excellence : Tyson requested a building for their meat testing laboratory. They needed an addition attached to an existing building. Pac-Van’s modular building was the best solution for their space needs. The exterior of the modular laboratory is high rib steel matching the existing buildings on site. There is one office in this building as the majority of this modular is for testing. The center area consists of lab counters for testing equipment and wall space for incubators. There are several sinks for washing lab equipment. A fully automated eye wash station was installed for any accidents in this lab. The rest of the building consists of a restroom, storage room and service room for utilities. Total area of the building is 2,160 sf.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Pac-Van’s modular building attached to Tyson’s existing building made moving equipment convenient, saved time and was more cost effective. Their lab equipment was heavy and oversized. One piece had to be lowered by crane into the building and the versatility of modular made this very convenient. Quick customization for Tyson’s very specific needs saved them build time. Thick flooring, oversized commercial HVAC units, space for a water treatment system and three phase power option made this modular a perfect solution to Tyson’s laboratory needs.

Technical Innovation : Because the modular was attached to an existing facility, extensive fireproofing was required. The factory installed a t-grid suspended ceiling at 8’6” to allow for tall testing incubators. This also allowed Tyson to run concealed power lines to equipment that required greater power. The plant only had 480v electrical service, so all electrical components were installed to accept three phase power. Dedicated outlets were installed on the ceiling in the lab area for future equipment. Vinyl flooring was laid over 1?” plywood sub floor with a 100 lb rating to allow heavy, large equipment to be moved easily. Also, a 4’ wide door was installed to make moving equipment convenient. The building provided enough fresh air flow to accommodate the excessive heat put off by the incubators. An oversized air conditioning system was required to compensate for the additional heat. A full water treatment system in the modular was necessary to provide chemical/mineral free water for testing.
