Architectural Excellence : University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is nestled along the Pacific Ocean on 1,200 acres of coastal woodlands. This project is comprised of 2 – 14 unit complexes that provide an abundance of wide open work areas. The spacious design allows a multitude of layout options using modular furniture and partitions. Obscure glass partitions are used in several areas and provide privacy while creating an open and light ambience. A unique deck unifies the two structures. Mechanical screens are positioned to conceal the air conditioning units. Exterior architectural canopies and buttresses provide shade and add interest to this project. The site has limited space and a unique footprint. By positioning one of the buildings at an angle to the other building, a maximum amount of usable space was provided.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Solatubes with daylight harvesting controls are used to provide natural light while minimizing energy consumption. The HVAC system is zoned to provide a cost effective system. Low-E windows are double insulated and also help to conserve energy. Floors, walls and roofs have R-19, R-11 and R-30 unfaced fiberglass insulation respectively. Motion sensors are used for the majority of interior lights to ensure that a room is kept dark when occupants are not present. One large bank of restrooms is provided in one of the buildings but is strategically located to serve both. This design feature not only decreases manufacturing cost, but decreases site utilities as well. Each building has an electrical room and electrical circuits for all 14 modules are routed to each respective electrical room. The two electrical rooms are located approximately 60’ apart and help minimize the sitework required to serve two buildings.

Technical Innovation : The two modular buildings are in very close proximity to each other. Restrooms were provided in one building, which offers easy access by occupants of both structures. Strategically placing one lavatory versus two provided significant cost savings to the university. The biggest challenge for this project was the tight schedule and a limited budget. Budget and time constraints could have easily justified setting aside aesthetic considerations. UCSD, however is dedicated to protecting the appeal and practicality of the campus. The addition of a unifying deck (with ramps and steps) along with canopies and other site installed structures create a cohesive campus that blends in with adjacent buildings and conceals the fact that these are temporary modular buildings.
