Additional Info
Award Winner : Pacific Mobile Structures, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : The University of California, Irvine required a temporary dining facility capable of providing three full meals per day to 500 students during a $20 million dining expansion project. In response, Pacific Mobile Structures designed and installed a versatile, comfortable and space-efficient 24-floor modular facility that was fully functional within three months.
The interior features a full-service kitchen, food preparation area, wash room, dining hall, restrooms, storage, office space, and servery.
Pacific Mobile paid special attention to ensuring the structure complements the surrounding landscape and residence halls with an appropriate exterior color profile and varied height retaining wall set on a temporary foundation around the perimeter of the installation. These and other exterior features make the dining hall easily accessible to students while seamlessly blending in to the campus environment.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : To minimize expense while maximizing the benefits of the university’s interim dining solution, Pacific Mobile designed the temporary structure to enable the reuse of all existing kitchen equipment and dining hall furnishings without requiring costly alteration or replacement. Even the structure itself can be relocated and reused for future projects once the permanent dining facility is constructed. This will reduce the cost of demolition and future temporary construction.
In addition, Pacific Mobile helped the university conserve labor costs by opening the project to participation from university staff and working closely with UC Irvine to ensure strict adherence to budget and schedule targets.
