Architectural Excellence : The University of St. Thomas was opening a new program within its nursing school and had an immediate need for a simulated medical facility for nurse training. Conveniently placed on the existing campus, M SPACE provided roughly 1,500 square feet of open space to accommodate 10 hospital beds, learning stations and nursing equipment. An administrative office with a large tempered glass window was placed in full view of the open training area. Also included is a storage area/break room with added base and wall cabinets and a handicap accessible restroom. The interior features checkerboard commercial grade tile for a cost effective, long-lasting and heavy duty floor choice. The exterior utilizes a combination of brick and Hardie Panel siding to fit within the existing campus and aesthetically blend with the surrounding historic area.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The University of St. Thomas Nursing School chose modular construction because the project could be completed much faster and within budget when compared to conventional construction. The nurse training facility was delivered on time, despite the challenges of transportation in the historic district. The high-end windows above the beds, coupled with the open area floor plan, allow for more natural light to enter. Additionally, utilizing energy efficient windows, energy saving ballasts and high efficiency HVAC with programmable thermostats, the client further saves on electric costs.

Technical Innovation : The training facility was needed within a small, tightly spaced historic district. M SPACE worked closely with the local authorities to receive their approval and transport the modules through the district without moving protected trees. The main road was closed off, due to space limitations, and the modules were escorted to the site location.
The facility was outfitted with oxygen and nitrous oxide gases. Each bed was equipped with 10 receptacles to properly operate the equipment tied to them and the floor load was increased to 100 psf. Wall mounted medical sinks with foot pedal controls were installed to conveniently allow hands free access to water and a 6-gallon electric water heater eliminated the time it takes to heat water. The interior features no-VOC paints and low-E glass windows with bronze tint. Windows were placed up high above the beds for security reasons. The HVAC System is 18 SEER with 100 percent fresh air return.
