Additional Info

Award Winner : BOXX Modular

Architectural Excellence : This project consisted of an approximate 15,000 sq. ft. outpatient medical facility for the US Veterans Administration, which is located in Leesville, LA (Ft. Polk). As a permanent modular facility, the project included a permanent foundation system, which enabled the building to have a ground-level entry across the entire front of the building and enabled the design of a sufficient drainage system--the facility is actually nestled in a forested area with limited city services available. The project includes various water storage systems, a large generator sufficient to power the entire facility, a large vehicular porta-cache’ (drive-up, covered front entry area), and many upgrade finishes and features particular to a hospital-type environment.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Because the VA was tasked with providing the equivalency of a LEED Silver design, we designed the building with many green features. Through our staff of LEED professionals (including a LEED AP), the building portion of the project included a wide range of LEED features, including energy efficient systems, as well as interior environmental and exterior features that enhance the well-being of the occupants and the environment.

Technical Innovation : The VA was seeking a solution that included a fast project completion schedule, limited funding, and a LEED Silver Equivalency. There were significant challenges to be overcome. The site started as forested area with a significant grade, so a lot of clearing and dirt-work had to be done before any foundation work could begin. The city could not supply sufficient water pressure to power the sprinkler system, there was no city electric to the site until after project completion, there were numerous architectural and functional features to be met, all under a limited budget. A 30,000 gallon water storage system was designed and installed to supply the sprinkler system. To ensure the facility would remain operational in disaster-type conditions, a 10,000 gallon potable water storage system and a large power generation / fuel-storage system was designed and installed. Ultimately, the facility can remain functional for one week without any city-services or refilling of storage systems.
