Vale - Clarabelle Mine Dry Building
Additional Info
Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions
Architectural Excellence : This custom two-story “Dry Facility” replacing an existing facility at a busy mine provides the workforce of 230 with a “clean” area to change before descending into the mines, and a separate “dirty” area to shower and place their wet clothes in heated, ventilated lockers at shifts end. For hygienic reasons, the “clean” and “dirty” areas are compartmentalized and separately ventilated. Men’s and women’s shower/change areas are on the lower level, with team rooms and open spaces for future expansion on the upper floor. The unique projection of modules at the entry way fits the functional layout, while giving the industrial building architectural expression. The exterior features heavy gauge corrugated prefinished steel cladding and sliced architectural block for aesthetics and durability. The bathrooms are finished in ceramics, floors are poured epoxy and interior walls are painted abuse resistant gypsum board above FRP. Ceilings are painted exposed metal deck in the locker areas.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The typical function and potential risks working on a busy mine site demand that as much of the building be completed away from the working area as possible. We developed ways of moving even more of the site finish from the site back to the plant by implementing faster and more efficient connections at the mate-lines architecturally, mechanically and electrically. This kept the on-site time and expense to a minimum. Special design requirements for the HVAC were applied for the shower/dry areas to heat the air, and remove humidity. A hydronic heating system with condensing boilers was used, and a heat recovery ventilator was added to the clothes drying exhaust. Cooling was zone controlled in specific areas with variable air volume. We increased insulation to walls, roof and floor of the building, as well providing energy efficient lighting and reduced flow fixtures where possible to improve the energy efficiencies of the building.

Technical Innovation : Structural steel post and beam design with pre-poured concrete floor assemblies allowed the building layout to easily capture the varying shapes of the program or functional spaces and this is reflected in the aesthetics of the exterior elevations. The single story portion of the building is designed to accept a second floor at a later date if needed. Each module is designed with engineered built in lifting eyes to allow them to be picked off the trailer and placed onto the foundation or on to each other without slings and spreaders. NRB also engineered and built in a “tie off “system for working or walking on the roof that was then left in place for future use by the owner as they requested.
