Award Winner : Icon Construction, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : Icon completed the design and construction of a 20 unit, 15,572 SF, 2-Story Modular Admin Facility for the VA. The floor plan and structural design was creatively crafted around the strict requirements and attention given to the relationships between groups and removing any disparity in size between offices for staff with the same position. Keeping with the appearance, feel and functionality of nearby facilities, the building features: full brick exterior with cast stone accents; grade set foundation with a decoratively covered concrete main entry; vinyl wood plank flooring throughout the majority of the facility along with ceramic tile and seamless sheet vinyl elsewhere; numerous high end details including painted accent walls and solid surface counter tops; hidden condensing units on roof concealed by surrounding parapet walls; interior elevator; dedicated high efficiency cooling in server rooms on both levels; complete energy management, access control and security system tie-in.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The immediate challenge was to provide a cost effective, permanent facility whose functionality and interior and exterior appearance blended with the adjacent buildings that tightly surrounded it. While negotiating the customer’s desires against their budget for the project, Icon provided valuable alternatives where possible without sacrificing functionality, appearance and energy efficient sustainable features common to traditional permanent new construction at the VA installation. Such items included vinyl wood plank flooring in lieu of engineered wood flooring and DekoFlake, ducted ac/heat in lieu of ductless ac/heat, energy and cost efficient exit/emergency lighting in lieu of more decorative fixtures. Icon also partnered with Phoenix Elevator to provide a fully enclosed interior modular elevator with access control, where the well-coordinated execution efficiently limited installation time and cost.

Technical Innovation : The tight site provided little flexibility for the numerous live and abandoned utilities running under the future pit set foundation. Not to mention that the building covered nearly the entire site on all four sides, leaving no room to grade the site for a level building pad. The pit set foundation was creatively designed to allow for drainage, crawl space access and ventilation, functionality and accommodating efficient user access and egress. The floor plan was designed to accommodate floor access into an existing communications vault underneath the building. Multiple power, communications and AV system connections provided at specific floor locations to accommodate customer furniture systems and high end conference tables. The building featured LED and high efficiency lighting with occupant sensors and high efficiency HVAC units tied into an energy management system.
