Additional Info
Award Winner : Silver Creek Industries
Architectural Excellence : In order to create a space for students at Walnut High School to fully enjoy their celebrated musical program, the school district orchestrated the development of the 10,140 sf band building. Two large practice rooms joined together by spacious private practice rooms, instrument storage rooms, staff offices, and restroom facilities. The band room is 3,200 sf with access to a mezzanine for string instruments. A second large open space, the orchestra room contains over 2,100 sf for performing musical harmony in a well proportioned area. The conductor may practice with a group while students practice in separate personal soundproof rooms. Also included is a uniform storage, ensemble room, and a highly specialized music library. The ensemble of interior spaces are brought together with a large volume of clear space over 18' tall. The exterior features a building that stands 26' tall with stucco siding and a brick veneer wainscot.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The design focus of the project was to deliver a highly efficient harmonious musical learning environment. All rooms are controlled with occupancy sensors to monitor the unnecessary use of light when rooms are unoccupied. Dual switching is available to assist lighting levels from many of the dimmable 60 tubular skylights. These design strategies provide a major reduction in electrical usage throughout the day. A highly reflective single-ply roof membrane was installed to minimize heating loads and provide a high quality, long lasting roof assembly.

Technical Innovation : This building was designed to expand the passion for quality music. Walls and ceilings are covered with acoustical panels and ceiling tiles to promote sound quality within the high volume spaces. Efficient roof mounted gas electric mechanical units balance air quality with limited static noise dispersion within the duct delivery system to each individual space. The twenty-six foot high slab on grade building was specifically designed to manufacture the vast majority of the exterior building at the production plant prior to shipping to the site. The innovative technique lessened the duration of the project at the job site. The building provides a significant volume of natural light to the interior with this high performance day lighting strategy that incorporates tubular skylights throughout.
