Architectural Excellence : This new modular office and detention center for the Council of Three Fires on Walpole Island, was a combined Federal and Provincial Government initiative to provide the police department with an upgraded presence at the First Nation site. The project goal was to replace the old and dilapidated existing structure with a new building more indicative of the community and its needs; and provide the residents with a building symbolic of the men and women charged with the responsibility of maintaining law on the Island. Given the setting within the First Nation, the brick and block exterior finish of this new modular police services building was designed to blend in with the environment, and to both enhance and reinforce the police presence. Interior is brightly finished with vinyl covered drywall, suspended ceilings, and ceramic/vinyl tile floor finishes. Front entrance/reception is protected with polycarbonate, bullet impact glazing and impact resistant, interior wall partitioning.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Gas fired, roof mounted, HVAC packaged units with economizers were utilized for this application to further reduce the total heating/cooling cost. Further efficiencies were gained by increasing the insulation values in the floor/wall and roof assemblies as well as installing energy efficient, dual glazing for all the exterior windows and energy efficient lighting.
We provided a complete turnkey project with the modular police services building being 90% completed at the factory to minimize time and potential disruption at the site.

Technical Innovation : Non-combustible construction with welded, steel frames including post and beam construction providing structural integrity and durability to meet the demands of transportation and handling of the individual modules at the site. The building floor plan was designed to accommodate a six to eight constable detachment (including ‘Interview Rooms’ and ‘Exhibit Vault’) as well as a designated area for detention. We built the “sally port” and jail cell areas that were completely secured from the rest of the complex, completely preassembled, but without any floor installed so it could be set down over the concrete slab poured on site. These sections could be picked up from the transport carriers, using the built in lifting eyes, and easily set in place.
