Water treatment facility
Additional Info
Award Winner : Corner Cast Construction Inc.
Architectural Excellence : The simple and compact design stacked two 40ft high cube containers and created ease of functionality for the water treatment systems. The system was designed with access hatches and a 2T overhead crane allowing for ease of maintenance and service. The efficient installation design also allowed for a one-day assembly and commissioning on site.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The high levels of insulation and energy efficient materials allowed for savings on electrical energy consumption to keep the water above zero during the harh Canadian winters, which would have otherwise been cost prohibitive. The design which utilized a compact layout allowed for overall reduction in planned project cost in comparison to conventional alternatives. The unit was also designed to be relocated and re-used in future projects in other locations which would allow a longer service life. This project was also made economically viable by the use of shipping containers and their inherent structural integrity, which allowed all required systems to be stacked and contained in 640 square feet.
Green Building Description : By reusing a used shipping container for this project, we were able to recycle the steel for this unit and did not require additional materials for the base structure. Our insulation methods and materials reduced energy consumption. And minimum environmental impact on site was achieved through the speed of installation which was completed in one day, resulting in a reduction of construction site presence and pollution.

Technical Innovation : Corner Cast had the task of combining the water treatment systems into a very confined space. The system was simplified and designed to fit into 2 x 40 ft HC containers which included the anodes, 2 Ton crane, 8000 US gallon reservoir, aeration system and anti-humidification system. The additional challenge was to completely waterproof and reinforce the 40’ container to turn it into a reservoir, while also carrying the top unit with additional steel reinforcement for the overhead crane. Optimizing the use of the original structural integrety a sea container already offers.
